Raiah, Canaan DogRaiah is owned by River Rock Farm.

The Canaan Dog is described as alert, vigilant, devoted and docile with his family. He is in the Herding Group, a native from the Middle East. Aloof with strangers, inquisitive, loyal and loving with his own family. The Canaan Dog is a medium sized dog.

His dark almond-shaped eyes are slightly slanted, giving him an alert, watchful and inquisitive expression. His coat is a double coat, with the outer coat straight, harsh and lying flat -- with a slight ruff. The ruff is more pronounced on male dogs. The length of his coat is 1/2 to 11/2 inches, his tail is bushy.

The Canaan Dog has two color patterns. . . predominantly white, with mask and with or without additional patches of color. Preferably large body patches. Or, solid colored with or without white trim. The color may range from black through all shades of brown (sandy to red or liver). The solid colored dog may have trim on his chest, undercarriage, feet and lower part of leg and tail tip. The mask is the same color as the body patches on the dog, and is highly preferable in the white Canaan Dog.

The Canaan Dog moves in a quick, natural trot, almost tirelessly, covering ground more quickly then expected. He is agile and able to change directions almost instantaneously. The Canaan Dog is easily trained, although a very vocal dog. He is highly territorial and a natural guardian to his family. He has an extremely keen sense of hearing and smell. The Canaan Dog is naturally clean and easily housebroken. (This is due to a strong instinct to keep their "den" clean, which stems from their recent semi-wild past.)

The Canaan Dog was developed from the ancient Pariah Dog. The scientists, Drs. Rudolph and Rudolphina Menzel, dog experts and world authorities on Paraih Dogs, developed the Canaan Dog from stock captured in the Palestine. The Israelis used the Canaan Dog for guard duties, as mine detectors during war, as messengers and as Red Cross helpers.
