Pharoah Hound

Although originating in Egypt, the Pharoah Hound has existed on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo for over 2,000 years. The Pharoah Hound is the national dog of Malta.

The first Pharoah Hound - a bitch - arrived in the United States, in 1967. The Pharaoh Hound was recognized for registration in AKC's Stud Book on August 1, 1983, and entered into AKC Regular Classes: January 1, 1984.

A clean dog, the Pharoah Hound requires little in grooming - twice weekly brushing to his short, odor-free coat, keeps shedding to a minimum. The coat is short and glossy, ranging from fine and close to slightly harsh with no feathering. Color ranges from tan/rich - tan/chestnut, with white markings allowed.

White tip on the tail is strongly desired. White on the chest (called "the Star"), white on toes and slim white snip on center line of face are permissible.

The Pharaoh Hound is medium sized, his appearance one of grace, power and speed. He has hard, clean-cut lines, and is of noble bearing. The Pharoah Hound is very fast, with free easy movement and an alert expression.

The Pharoah Hound's eyes are amber colored, blending with the coat. His ears are medium high set and carried erect when alert. His nose is flesh colored, blending with the coat - no other color. His neck is long, lean and muscular with a slight arch to carry the head on high.

His gait is free and flowing, covering ground well with no apparent effort. His legs should move in line with his body. He is intelligent, friendly, affectionate and playful. Alert and active, the Pharoah Hound is very fast with a marked keenness for hunting, both by sight and scent.
