sable & white Rough Collie puppy
Darling sable and white, rough coated Collie puppy

Renowned for his loyalty and his reliability, the Collie makes a great companion and friend. He is not an aggressive dog, but protective and loyal to his family and an alert watchdog. The crowning glory of the rough variety of Collie is his well-fitting, proper-textured coat - which must be brushed weekly to keep the coat clean and free of mats. (Note : the smooth coated Collie should have weekly, thorough coat brushings, as well.)

The Rough Collie coat is abundant except on the head and legs, with a rough, straight outer coat covering a soft, furry undercoat that is so dense, it is difficult to see the skin when the hair is parted. There are four recognized coat colors, in both varities of Collie. Sable and white - the most prominent color by far, tri-color, blue merle and white. Sable and white is a tan/mahogany/light gold color, with generous markings in white on the chest, neck, feet, legs and tip of tail.

The tri-color is predominantly black with white markings similar to the sable and white, and tan "shadings" on the head and legs. The blue merle's coat has a "mottled" or marbled look to the coloring, which is a blue-grey with white markings. The white markings are also similar to the sable and white markings, and the blue merle usually has tan shadings similar to the tri-color, as well. The white Collie is predominantly white, preferably with sable, tri-color or blue merle markings.

The Collie is a lithe, strong, responsive, active dog, presenting an impressive, proud picture of true balance. His expression relays high intelligence, his body indicates speed and grace.

Interesting to note, the Collie's parent club, The Collie Club of America, was organized in 1886, two years after the establishment of the American Kennel Club and was the second parent club to join the AKC.
