Royal dog of Egypt, the Saluki is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated dog. Some historians have identified the Saluki as "a distinct breed and type as long ago as 329 B.C. when Alexander the Great invaded India."

The Saluki was held in such high esteem in Egypt, that its body was often mummified like the bodies of the Pharaohs themselves.

An active breed that loves the outdoors, the Saluki should never be left off a leash or let to roam outside of a fenced yard. The Saluki is an affectionate dog, showing great attachment to his owner -- thriving in families where he is the focus of attention.

Ari, Saluki

The Saluki has a long, narrow head carried on a long, supple neck. The neck is carried proudly, and is well muscled. Their ears are long, covered with long silky hair. The Saluki's eyes are dark to hazel and bright, and large and oval. Their tail is long and set low, carried naturally in a curve. It is well feathered on the underside with long silky hair -- not bushy.

The Saluki's coat is silky soft and smooth, with a slight feather on the legs, feather at the back of the thighs and sometimes with slight woolly feather on the thigh and shoulder. Coat color is white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, tricolor (white, black and tan) and black and tan.

Overall, the appearance of the Saluki is of grace and of great speed and endurance, coupled with strength and activity to enable it to kill gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountains. The Saluki's expression should be dignified and gentle with deep, faithful, far-seeing eyes. There is a smooth variety, which has no feathering.
