Also called a Hungarian Pointer, the Vizsla was all but extinct at the end of World War I. Sensitive dogs, Vizsla's devote themselves to those who treat them kindly and give them attention. The Vizsla is not very discriminating to who he shows affection, he loves everyone.
The Vizsla is a dog of power and drive in the field yet an affectionate companion in the home. Robust but rather lightly built, he is a medium-sized, short-coated hunting dog of distinguished appearance and bearing. From the Vizsla STandard, on general appearance, "It is strongly emphasized that field conditioned coats, as well as brawny or sinewy muscular condition and honorable scars indicating a working and hunting dog are never to be penalized in this dog. The qualities that make a "dual dog" are always to be appreciated, not deprecated." From the head to the tail, this dog is lean and muscular. The head itself is lean and muscular, with the skull moderately wide between the ears and the stop between skull and foreface is moderate, not deep. The muzzle is square and deep. The Vizsla's nose is brown, any other color is faulty, with a totally black nose a disqualification.
The Vizsla neck is strong, smooth and muscular, moderately long and arched, broadening nicely into shoulders which are moderately laid back. The moderately laid back shoulders are mandatory to maintain balance with the moderately angulated hindquarters. His body is strong and well proportioned. The
Vizsla's coat is short, smooth, dense and close-lying, without a woolly
undercoat. Coat color is solid golden rust in different shadings; solid
dark mahogany red and pale yellow are faulty. White on the forechest and
white on the toes are permissible. Any noticable area of black in the
coat is a serious fault. Lively, gentle-mannered, demonstrably affectionate and sensitive though fearless with a well developed protective instinct, the Vizsla is a natural hunter endowed with a good nose and above-average ability to take training. The ideal male is 22 to 24 inches at the highest point over the shoulder blades, the ideal female is 21 to 23 inches.
